I’ve had this post sitting in the queue for awhile but Robert Nyman’s Worst Code Ever topic (also covered at 456 Berea Street) prompted me to finally post it.
I’m not just talking about the stuff we know is bad. The endless layout tables, garish background images, and old school layouts. I’m talking about the stuff we thought was supposed to be good. CSS layouts are finally starting to become more common. Big web sites are redesigning with CSS, and they might even look more fresh and modern. But is it really better? You’d think, until you actually look at the code.

This is our cat, Tabby. She didn’t take any interest in the computer until Liam moved in and brought his Ubuntu laptop. Now she loves to use the computer.

See, she’s even doing some programming down at the bottom there. Although, Liam says that she only shows any interest when he’s listening to Radio 4. Hmmm…
By the way, I’m doing a little bit of work on the home page template here. I am working on a new footer that will display a list of my best posts and some other places to go. Better for noobs, you understand
I didn’t have much time to work on it this weekend so it’s sort of half right now
I have included my ma.gnolia bookmark list. I will try to add anything I’d like to share.

Tim, who is a moderator at TWF, asked me to guest blog at T&S Web design and the post is up today. It’s about logo design – specifically, How to avoid having a terrible logo. My original headline was “5 Things Business Owners Need to Know about Logo Design”, but I think I forgot to send that to Tim with my post. Too bad
Those globe graphics at the bottom aren’t mine either. God, globe logos
I’ll tell you a story about globe logos sometime
I did have this mostly written as a post for this site but I thought that it might be more relevant to Tim’s audience.

I believe that good writing is really key to a good website. Great visual design, usability, mark-up, and SEO aren’t going to be nearly as effective if the writing is bad. However, this is something that falls through the cracks on a lot of websites. Ideally you’d have a copywriter or editor to take care of all your writing needs, but most small projects don’t have the resources to hire a writer (if they even consider it in the first place).
So whose job is it then? Read more…
